About Ruben
Ruben Kihuen was elected to serve the 11th Assembly District of Nevada in November of 2006. The district includes the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. He is currently completing his second term in office and has served in two regular sessions and three special sessions. He has served on the following Assembly committees: Education; Judiciary; Transportation; Corrections, Parole and Probation; Elections, Procedures, Ethics and Constitutional Amendments; Government Affairs; and Natural Resources. During his two terms in office, he voted to increase the penalties for domestic violence, for more money and higher standard for schools and teachers and to give small business low-interest loans when they want to expand their workforce.
Ruben has spent his entire professional career fighting to empower working families, students, and the poor- as a community organizer, college recruiter and academic advisor. He served as student recruiter and academic advisor for the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) where he motivated and recruited hundreds of students to pursue higher education. He worked as a field organizer for campaigns in Nevada, Virginia, Florida and Texas, and served as regional representative to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Aside from his political responsibilities, Ruben serves as community liaison for CSN, and is a past member of the Clark County Community Development Advisory Committee and the North Las Vegas Citizen’s Advisory Committee.
Ruben was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and grew up in Las Vegas. He attended Rancho High School and graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education. He is currently completing his Master’s degree in Public Administration at the University of Oklahoma- Nellis Air Force Base Campus. Among his many accomplishments include: Nevada State Legislature co-Freshman of the Year; Hispanic of the Year, Latin Chamber of Commerce; John F. Kennedy Award, Nevada State Democratic Party; Outstanding Community Activist, City of Las Vegas; and Nevada High Schools Soccer Player of the Year.
Ruben’s family includes his parents, Armando and Blanca, his two older brothers, Omar and Jorge, and his younger sister, Mariana.
