Where I Stand
Revitalizing and Diversifying our Economy
The revitalization of our economy is essential for the restoration of our confidence in the future of Nevada. We must restore and diversify our economy to get Nevadans back to work. With a record unemployment rate, it is clear that we must explore innovative ways to diversify our economy. I will continue to make Nevada a good place to live by supporting efforts to grow our economy, developing sustainable communities, protect worker safety and leveraging new and emerging technologies to create more and higher-paying jobs.
Protecting Our Schools and Strengthening our Education System
We can’t fix our current budget problems on the backs of our children. We must balance the budget responsibly and not cut funding for education. We must expand education programs such as career and technical education that have a proven record of helping students succeed in school. And we must find ways to increase teacher salaries, reduce class sizes and demand higher performance. We must recruit, train and retain competent teachers committed to providing the best education for our rapidly growing student population.
Protecting Homeowners and Preventing Foreclosures
Our state has the highest foreclosure rate in the nation. We must do everything possible to help Nevadans stay in their homes. I will continue to work to create programs and enact laws that help protect homeowners in our fragile economy and prevent predatory lending practices. I will fight to protect the value of home ownership, so that our communities are stable, safe and well-maintained.
Protecting Our Seniors
Seniors of our state and community are among our greatest treasures, and they are also one of our greatest responsibilities. Respecting and serving our seniors is more than a matter of policy; it is a moral issue. We must continue to protect our senior citizens from out of control costs that threaten their quality of life. Prescription drugs and medical bills threaten our seniors every single day. We must protect our seniors by keeping their health care costs low and eliminating scams and fraud.
Combating Crime in Our Streets
When the economy goes down, crime and violence increases in our community. We must support and work in collaboration with local law enforcement to prevent crime in our neighborhoods. We must combat gang activity in our streets and our schools, and strengthen domestic violence laws.
Investing in Renewable Energy
Nevada is rich in natural resources that we need to harness to build a better, cleaner future for the next generation of Nevadans. We need to foster an environment that welcomes and is hospitable to the renewable energy industry. We can have a cleaner Nevada and put Nevadans back to work by investing in renewable energy.
